Stockport, UK – 25 November 2024
Soul Padel has received planning permission from Stockport Council to establish a permanent padel facility, following the success of their temporary courts launched earlier this year. The new development will feature four canopy-covered courts and a clubhouse, enhancing access to this rapidly growing sport for the local community.
Since opening their temporary courts in partnership with the town’s Decathlon store in the summer, over 1,500 locals have discovered padel at Soul Padel’s Stockport venue. The club’s mission is to make padel more accessible and inclusive, and the growing number of players—from complete beginners to experienced racket sport enthusiasts—demonstrates their success in fostering a vibrant community.
The approval comes just days after Soul Padel launched an initiative offering free weekly padel sessions for local schoolchildren. The program kicked off with a taster event attended by 40 PE leads from Stockport’s primary schools, all eager to bring their pupils to experience the game.
Mark Hewlett, CEO and Founder of Soul Padel, expressed his excitement about the future: "We’re thrilled that Stockport will soon have a permanent home for padel. Over the past few months, it’s been inspiring to see such a diverse range of players step onto our courts, whether they’re former tennis aficionados or completely new to racket sports. Our introductory taster sessions have been incredibly popular, and with double the number of courts, we’ll have much greater capacity to welcome people to meet, connect and play. This expansion will help even more of the Stockport community experience the physical, mental, and social benefits that padel offers."
Padel is a dynamic racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. Played in doubles on an enclosed court about a third the size of a tennis court, the game is easy to learn, highly social, and accessible for players of all ages and skill levels, making it one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide.
Construction on the Stockport site is expected to begin before Christmas with the temporary courts remaining unaffected while building is underway. Launch of the new permanent courts is expected early in 2025 marking a significant milestone in Soul Padel’s mission to grow the sport locally.
